Mt Fraser

A very prominent breached scoria cone next to the Hume Hwy at Beveridge, 50 kms north of Melbourne. This was one of a small number of eruption points just to the north of the city that produced the lava flows which cover much of the northern suburbs.

An active quarry is removing scoria from the southern rim of the volcano, which is sold for various things, including BBQ rocks.

Impressions:

This is one of the first volcanoes we visited, and it is a beautiful example of not just a Victorian volcano, but of a Melbourne volcano as well! It was after that fateful first visit that Natalie proclaimed "I will visit every volcano in Victoria before I die!", which has led to this website being created.

Driving north along the Hume Fwy, Faser is easily noticable on the horizon as the freeway rounds the base of Bald Hill. Indeed, the road heads straight towards it. From this vantage, you can see both sides of the rim, as well as the quarry that cuts through the southern edge of the volcano.

Closer views can be obtained by hopping off at Beveridge. There are a few roads around the base, most notably what looks like the old highway that passes it's western flank and gives a lovely view of the breach. This does turn into a private road though, so don't drive too far. One day we plan to visit the quarry and ask if it's possible to walk through into the crater.

Excellent views of Faser and Bald Hill can be had from the mountains to the east, most notably from Jenna Rd, near Eden Park.
